Matt Tucker typeface evaluation (alphabet soup)

About the typeface I designed for Matt.

1) Which personality traits did you choose to respond to and apply to the typeface?

From the interview with matt i got the impression he is quite laid-back and relaxed, but not lazy. I realised earlier before this brief that he likes some of the same sorta music as I do, and shares some of the same interests, so it was quite easy to identify some adjectives. I didn't want to use 5 specific adjectives as I feel this would have made the creation of this typeface too complicated, and also over-complicating stuff doesn't seem to be Matts style either. I did think about using 'alternative' as an adjective, but I think it is far too vague, especially being in a class full of people into alternative sort of stuff. Matt wern't keen on 'alternative' either. Therefore I chose 'Brie Light' as a font to base mine on, as it is in itself a relaxed and informal typeface (sample on  DC blog), before making alterations to suit matt's characteristics.

2) What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface?

I thinned out the left hand side of all the letters that this could be applied to. To me it seems like this would give the impression that matt might have a different way of thinking, like maybe more questioning as to why things are the way they are, and not the next way. I contrasted this with fat bars reducing the size of the counters in some places, as this might suggest he's probably quite different once you get to know him.

3) In what way are the results effective?

I feel that as a typeface it works on some levels, i think that the alterations made are not absolutely huge but it is definately a different typeface now. Maybe it doesn't represent Matt that well, but to be honest, my opinion is irrelevant in this situation as I made the typeface after interviewing Matt - it's easy for me to say yes it does represent him but really someone else would have to look at it and guess some characteristics of who it might represent before I could say yes it has worked.
